Sydney to Adelaide flights land at Adelaide Airport (ADL), not in Hahndorf. Qantas lists Adelaide as a direct destination from Sydney (Kingsford Smith). Virgin Australia publishes Sydney (SYD) to Adelaide (ADL) flights and describes a direct flight as about 2 hours and 10 minutes, as a guide only. Jetstar lists Sydney to Adelaide among popular flights to South Australia and says to fly to Adelaide (ADL). Hahndorf’s own directions then start from Adelaide: about 28 kilometres south-east of the city and about 30 minutes by car on the South Eastern Freeway. The South Australian Tourism Commission describes the Adelaide Hills, and names Hahndorf as a major town, as about a 40-minute drive from the airport. Compare the flight on the Sydney to Adelaide search, then the car hire or bus and transfer pages for the second leg.

Adelaide Airport is the arrival airport

Virgin Australia and Jetstar both name Adelaide Airport as ADL. Virgin says the airport is about 6 kilometres from the Adelaide CBD. Adelaide Airport says there is no train or tram to the airport. Public buses leave from Stop 10 on Sir Richard Williams Avenue, a walk of about 2 to 5 minutes from the terminal, and the airport says luggage can go in the bus luggage space or beside you if that space is needed. Adelaide Metro says the J1 and J2 buses pass through the city centre. The J7 and J8 serve the south-western and north-western suburbs and do not go into the city, so they are the wrong bus for a Hahndorf connection.

From the airport to Hahndorf

The village page puts Hahndorf about 28 kilometres south-east of Adelaide and about 30 minutes by car via the South Eastern Freeway. Visit Adelaide Hills gives the same 30 minutes from Adelaide and says the Hahndorf exit is signposted. The tourism commission’s Hills guide says the region is about 30 minutes south-east of Adelaide and about 40 minutes from the airport, and names Hahndorf as a major town. Those are different start points. Treat both as approximate, and add traffic.

Ways to continue from Adelaide Airport to Hahndorf
OptionWhat to use
Hire carHahndorf’s getting-there page says hire cars are available at the airport and in the CBD. Visit Adelaide Hills says the same, and that freeway exits including Hahndorf are signposted. Collect the car, then follow the South Eastern Freeway to the Hahndorf exit. The village page recommends parking at the far end of the main street, which it describes as free. Read the signs when you arrive.
Public busPlan two legs unless the journey planner shows one service. Adelaide Airport and Adelaide Metro say J1 or J2 run between the airport and the city. Adelaide Metro’s Hahndorf timetable search lists city services via the village, including route 801 and the weekday limited-stop T801. Hahndorf’s own page names route 864, and the regional visitor site also names 864, T843, 841F and 860F. Those lists do not match the timetable search, so use the search for your date.
TransferA pre-booked car can meet you at the airport and use your Hahndorf address. Give the flight, passenger count, luggage and the full address. The quote on the partner site is the price.

The public-transport connection is written up on Adelaide to Hahndorf by bus. Fares are not repeated here. Adelaide Metro and Adelaide Airport both publish fares, and the two pages do not show the same amounts, so check Adelaide Metro on the day.

Leave time for the Hills, not only the flight

A direct flight is about 2 hours and 10 minutes in the air on Virgin Australia’s guide. Landing is earlier than the moment you can leave the airport. Add baggage, then the walk to Stop 10, the car-hire desk, or the transfer meeting point, then the road. The tourism commission’s figure for the Hills is about 40 minutes from the airport. A morning landing leaves the afternoon for the village. An evening landing leaves less of that day, and a public bus still has to be checked in Adelaide Metro’s timetable search rather than assumed from an older route number. On the way back, add the same road time, or both bus legs, before the airline wants you at Adelaide Airport.
