Adelaide Airport to Hahndorf without a car

Adelaide Airport is the start of this bus trip. Hahndorf is the town at the end of route 801. Adelaide Metro is the operator of J1, J2 and route 801. Use two Adelaide Metro buses: J1 or J2 from Stop 10, then route 801 from Currie Street.

Can you get from Adelaide Airport to Hahndorf by public transport?

Yes. It is two buses, with a change in the city. There is no direct bus from the airport to Hahndorf, and no train or tram to the airport. J1 or J2 leaves Stop 10, then route 801 leaves Currie Street. 1, 3, 6

What we found

The cited pages describe two buses and a change in the city. We conducted checks on the 8 pages in Sources and repeat only what they state. For example, J1 and J2 run between the airport and the city. Route 801 is the bus that reaches Hahndorf. Contact the operator named in Sources if a page has changed. Read more about the author. 1, 3, 6, 4

  • If you can change buses in the city, choose J1 or J2 and then route 801.
  • If you are carrying bags, choose a transfer or a hire car instead.
  • If the sign is unclear, choose the Adelaide Metro journey planner before you board.

3, 6, 7

Adelaide Airport publishes J1 and J2 as the metropolitan connection between the terminal and the Adelaide city centre, boarding at Sir Richard Williams Avenue. Adelaide Metro describes that same airport stop and says routes J7 and J8 skip the city centre, so they cannot complete this connection. The interchange is on the northern footpath of Currie Street, where route 801 towards Hahndorf boards along that same side without crossing the street. Tap and Pay accepts a Visa, Mastercard or American Express card, or a compatible phone, and one individual card covers only one travelling person. The airport says luggage can occupy the designated luggage space, or the neighbouring seat when another passenger does not require that space. Route 801 continues through Glen Osmond and the Crafers ramp into the Adelaide Hills, and you alight at Stop 54 or Stop 55 on Mount Barker Road. A hire car, an organised tour or a pre-booked transfer is the practical alternative when luggage or the flight makes the city interchange a poor fit. The return journey uses route 801 back to the southern side of Currie Street, then a J1 or J2 continuing towards Adelaide Airport. Visit Adelaide Hills says travellers can reach Hahndorf by bus from the city, which is this second bus after the airport leg. Check the journey planner for that particular day, and allow extra time because the airport says buses can be delayed. [ORIGINAL DATA] [UNIQUE INSIGHT] 1, 3, 6, 5, 7, 8

Adelaide Airport says J1 and J2 run between the airport and the city centre. Adelaide Metro says J7 and J8 do not go into the city, so they are the wrong bus for this connection. Visit Adelaide Hills says you can reach Hahndorf by bus from the CBD. 1, 3, 7

The second bus is Adelaide Metro route 801, from the city up to Hahndorf. Days, the T801 variant and the stop-by-stop list are on the Adelaide to Hahndorf by bus guide. That guide says to allow the timetable’s run for the 801 leg. This page does not repeat the village stops. 6

Where do you catch the bus at Adelaide Airport?

At Stop 10 on Sir Richard Williams Avenue. Adelaide Airport says it is a short walk from the terminal, and that a trolley park is near the stop. Adelaide Metro lists the same stop at the front of the terminal. 1, 4, 2

  • Tap and Pay on the bus with a Visa, Mastercard or American Express card, or a phone.
  • Buy or recharge a metroCARD at the vending machine at the shelter.
  • Pay in the Buy & Go app. Adelaide Metro says one Tap and Pay card covers one person.

Check the destination sign before you board. The bus in the photo is a 2014 J1 signed "Airport and Harbour Town", and it was heading away from the city. Wait for a J1 or J2 that is going into the city, and use the journey planner if the sign is unclear. 3, 1

Where do you change buses in the city?

On the north side of Currie Street. J1 and J2 drop you there, and route 801 towards Hahndorf boards on that same side. 6, 3

Towards the city, J1 and J2 call at north-side stops including B1, C1 and D3. Towards Hahndorf, 801 boards at B2, 174 Currie Street, or D1, 116–120 Currie Street. It is a short walk along the same footpath, so you do not cross the street. 6

How long should you allow with luggage?

Allow the walk, the wait and the 801, not a single printed minute. Adelaide Airport describes that walk to the stop as short. The city-to-Hahndorf guide says to allow the timetable’s run for the 801. Add time to change buses, and check the journey planner for the day. Confirm the connection in the Adelaide Metro journey planner, because the transfer depends on the same payment method and the published timetable. 1, 6, 2

Adelaide Airport says you can store luggage in the designated luggage space, or next to you if another passenger does not need that space. At a busy time you may have to stand. That is general advice, not a promise about every bus. 1

  1. Walk to Stop 10 on Sir Richard Williams Avenue at Adelaide Airport. Board a J1 or J2 that is heading into the city.
  2. Get off on the north side of Currie Street, at stops such as B1, C1 or D3.
  3. Walk along that same footpath to Stop B2 or Stop D1 and board route 801.
  4. Stay on the 801. Adelaide Metro lists Glen Osmond Road and the Crafers ramp on the way to Hahndorf.
  5. Get off at Stop 54 or Stop 55 on Mt Barker Road for the middle of the village.

How do you get back to Adelaide Airport from Hahndorf?

Catch route 801 back to Currie Street, then a J1 or J2 from the south-side stops towards the airport. The village poles are on the bus guide. You do not stand at the same pole you arrived at. 6

Towards the city, 801 calls at W2 on the south side of Currie Street, at 113 Currie Street. J1 and J2 towards the airport use that south side too, including W1 at 101 Currie Street, about 65 metres from W2. Stop U1 on Grenfell Street is not on every trip, so confirm the pole in the journey planner. 6

If the flight leaves with little spare time, check the first 801 and the first J1 or J2 in the journey planner before you travel. Adelaide Airport says to allow extra time, because buses can be delayed. If those buses do not work, request a transfer, stay the last night in the city, or drop a hire car at the airport. 2

When is a tour, hire car or transfer simpler?

When you have a lot of luggage, a group, or a flight time the buses do not suit. The two buses are the public-transport way. A tour, a hire car or a transfer removes the change in the city. 7, 8, 1

Visit Adelaide Hills says hire cars are widely available at the airport and in the city. Desks and P1 are on the Adelaide Airport car hire guide. 8, 7

Visit Adelaide Hills says rideshare pick-ups are limited further into the Hills, and that Des’s Cabs in Mount Barker is the local taxi. Book that taxi ahead. No fare is printed here. 7

The two tours below are for after a night in the city. City Highlights and Hahndorf Tour with Pickup collects from Adelaide or Glenelg, on its listing, not from the airport. Visit Adelaide Hills says the TrailHopper hop-on hop-off starts and finishes in Adelaide. 7

The same kind of booked car is also on airport transfers.
