What we found on 31 October 2026

The airport’s pages put the desks in the terminal and the cars in P1. The airport names six companies under one roof, such as Avis and Hertz. The freeway exit for Hahndorf is signposted. Our search from Glenelg on 31 October 2026 showed no depot there. 1, 4, 3, 9, 10, 11

We repeat only what the pages in Sources state. Contact the airport page named in Sources if a detail has changed. Read more about the author. 1

A private or off-airport company may use a different meeting point. Adelaide Airport says to ask that company where to go, and how to get there from the terminal. This page does not print desk hours or phone numbers. 1

Where do you pick up a rental car at Adelaide Airport?

Collect the keys at the desks beside baggage claim, then walk to the car. Adelaide Airport describes the pick-up area as the ground level of the P1 Terminal Car Park, a short walk from the terminal. Adelaide Airport describes collection and return as an undercover connection between the terminal and the multi-level car park, with trolleys available. Ask the rental company about collecting the car when the desk is shut, because the airport does not publish one policy for every brand. 1

The photo above is that multi-level car park in May 2023. The sign on the building points to rental car returns. The airport page is what places both collection and returns on the ground floor.

  • Book ahead. Adelaide Airport says booking before you fly saves time on landing.
  • Check the pick-up is on the airport. An off-airport lot is a different meeting point.
  • Ask the company about collecting the car when the desk is shut. The airport does not set one rule for every brand.
  • Ask the company about the fuel rule. Adelaide Airport says each company sets its own fuel and cleaning policy.

Is Adelaide Hills car hire at the airport or in the city?

Both. Visit Adelaide Hills says hire cars are widely available in the city and metropolitan area, and at Adelaide Airport. The town association says car hire is available from the Adelaide CBD or the airport. 4, 3

Collect at the airport if you want the car when you land. A city depot means a separate trip from the terminal before you join the freeway. Staying in the city first? See car hire in Adelaide city for a Hahndorf day trip. 4

Confirm the depot address with the company. The town page is from January 2021, so this guide uses the airport’s current desk list, not an older brand list. 3, 1

Staying in Glenelg: where is the nearest car hire?

Our car hire search from Glenelg showed no depot in Glenelg itself. The nearest pickups it returned were the Adelaide Airport desks and three suburban branches: Budget at Marleston, Sixt at Edwardstown and Europcar at Clarence Gardens. Each company’s own branch page confirms the address. Then drive to Hahndorf by the freeway. 9, 10, 11, 1, 4

  • Budget Adelaide Marleston (branch AM2), 215 Marion Road, Marleston SA 5033. Budget’s page lists the counter and cars on-site, returns to the same branch, and returns while the counter is closed.
  • Sixt Edwardstown, 1044 South Road, Edwardstown SA 5039. Sixt’s page says buses from Adelaide run along South Road with a stop near the front, and customer parking is off site on Dunorlan Road.
  • Europcar Adelaide Clovelly Park, 859 South Road, Clarence Gardens SA 5039. Europcar names the branch Adelaide Clovelly Park.

The airport desks are covered in Where do you pick up a rental car at Adelaide Airport, above. On the car hire page, choose the branch’s own address as the pickup and check the offer’s pick-up address. If you would rather not drive, see Adelaide to Hahndorf by bus. No car? See Glenelg to Hahndorf by tram and bus. 1

How do you drive from Adelaide Airport to Hahndorf?

Take the South Eastern Freeway and leave at the signposted Hahndorf exit. Visit Adelaide Hills says the freeway is six lanes, links Adelaide and Melbourne, and signposts exits including Hahndorf. 4, 3

Keep the drives apart. A gateway town such as Crafers is not the same drive as Hahndorf, and the Hills from Adelaide are not the drive from the airport. Check a map for the one you are taking. 4

The town association says Hahndorf is 28 kilometres south-east of Adelaide, via the freeway. That drive does not start at the terminal. Check a map. 3

The photo is Mount Barker Road near the village, not the freeway. Visit Adelaide Hills describes winding lanes once you leave the freeway. The town page, on its interstate directions, says the road into the village is winding and to take it slowly. 3, 4

  • Drive on the left. Visit Adelaide Hills says speed limits are strictly enforced.
  • Do not drive at a blood alcohol level of 0.05 per cent or higher.
  • Do not use a handheld phone while driving.
  • Leave at least 1 metre when you pass a cyclist at 60 km/h or under, and 1.5 metres when the limit is over 60 km/h.
  • On a long drive, plan rest breaks and enough fuel.

The town association says parking is available along the main street, and recommends the free car parks at the far end so you can walk the village. The page is dated January 2021. Read the signs when you arrive. 3

What kind of hire car suits the Adelaide Hills?

Match the car to the people, the bags and anything you want to carry home, including wine. Visit Adelaide Hills calls the region a good place to explore by car, with quiet roads and winding lanes once you leave the freeway. 4

The photo shows a two-lane road that curves between trees at the edge of the village. A smaller car is easier to place on a road like that, and when you pass a cyclist.

A larger car makes sense when the group or the boot needs the space. Compare those sizes on the car hire page. This guide does not name a model.

If the car is electric, Visit Adelaide Hills points drivers to the RAA charging map. That page is a map of charging stations. It is not a list of pumps in Hahndorf, and this guide does not add one. 4, 8

Do you need a car for Hahndorf, or will the bus or a tour do?

You do not have to drive. A hire car suits luggage, a group, or stops on the way. 3, 4

The bus and a tour are the alternatives when you would rather not drive, including after wine tastings. The table has no fares and no timetable. 4

How do you return the car at Adelaide Airport?

Follow the signs to the rental return area on the ground floor of multi-level car park P1. Adelaide Airport says it is a short undercover walk to the terminal, there is no shuttle, and trolleys are available. 2

If the desks will be shut, ask your company about returning the car then. Adelaide Airport does not publish one policy for every brand. This guide does not print those hours. 2

Frequently asked questions

Is there car hire inside Adelaide Airport?

Yes. Adelaide Airport says the six on-site desks are on the ground floor of the terminal, next to baggage claim. You then collect the car on the ground level of the P1 car park, a short walk away. A private or off-airport company may use another point. Ask that company where to meet.

How far is Hahndorf from Adelaide Airport?

The Hahndorf exit is signposted. Check a map for the drive from Adelaide Airport, and for the separate drive from Adelaide. The town association says Hahndorf is 28 kilometres south-east of Adelaide. That drive starts in Adelaide, not at the terminal.

What if the desk is shut when I return the hire car?

Ask the rental company. Adelaide Airport says each company sets its own policy for a return when the desk is shut, and this guide does not print desk hours. The return area is still the ground floor of P1, a short undercover walk from the terminal. Allow extra time before the airline wants you at check-in.

Can I pick up a hire car in Hahndorf?

Most visitors pick up at the airport or in the city. Visit Adelaide Hills says hire cars are widely available in both places, and the town association says the same. Those pages do not confirm a staffed depot in the village. The car hire page can search Hahndorf and nearby. Read where that offer actually collects.

Is there car hire in Glenelg?

Our car hire search on 31 October 2026 found no depot in Glenelg. The nearest pickups it returned were at Marleston, Edwardstown and Clarence Gardens, plus the Adelaide Airport desks. Each company’s own page confirms the suburban address. Check the offer’s pick-up address before you book.

What licence do I need to hire a car at Adelaide Airport?

This guide does not set a licence rule. Check sa.gov.au and the rental company before you book, and ask whether they accept the licence you will drive on. Adelaide Airport also tells you to ask the company about collecting the car when the desk is shut. Desk hours and phone numbers are left off this page because they change.

For a room with a bath after the drive, see Adelaide Hills accommodation with a spa bath.

The stay below is a village hotel whose saved listing includes on-site parking, which helps while you still have the hire car. Open the property page to confirm the room. This guide does not print a rate.
