What we found

We conducted checks on the 19 pages in Sources and repeat only what they state. We read the Hahndorf Inn about page and the Hahndorf Brewing page. For example, the Inn about page is the Main Street pub, and the brewing page, such as its Bier Hall note, is the hall next door. Contact the venue before you go, and read about the author for how this was checked. 2, 5

The Department for Environment and Water says Hahndorf was established in 1839, the year the German Arms also cites, by Lutheran families from Prussia. It calls the town Australia's oldest surviving German settlement, 28 km south-east of Adelaide. 1

Which Hahndorf pub is best for a German beer-hall feel?

Choose the Hahndorf Inn and the Hahndorf Bier Hall next door when you want a German beer-hall feel. The Inn says it specialises in traditional Bavarian cuisine, with a dining room, a casual bar, outdoor tables, a saloon and a traditional German Bierhall. The brewing site’s headline is “HAHNDORF BIER HALL”. 2, 3, 5

Hahndorf has four main places for a pub-style drink and meal. Breakfast menus sit in breakfast in Hahndorf. German dishes, the hot dog and the shops are in German food in Hahndorf.

The Hahndorf Inn, 35 Main Street

The about page says the Inn was established in 1863, is owned by the Holmes family, and imports products from Bavaria and Austria, and it mentions open fireplaces. The reservations page says reservations are recommended, and the phone on the about page is (08) 8388 7063. 2, 4

The Bier Hall, in the barn next door.

The Inn’s functions page puts the Hahndorf Brewing Bier Hall in the Borchers Blacksmith Barn, circa 1863, adjacent to the Inn, with its own bar for locally brewed bier. The same note describes an outdoor beer garden with German dining-hall tables and lawn games, and the brewing site opens on limited days, so check those days there. 3, 5

That functions page lists the Inn’s dining room at up to 130, the saloon bar at 60, and the front bar at 50 cocktail style. The Bier Hall is listed at 120 cocktail style, 80 seated and 50 in the beer garden, and the page says minimum numbers and room hire can apply. 3

Which is the oldest pub in Hahndorf?

The German Arms, at 69 Main Street, is the pub to name. Its heading reads “Hahndorf’s meeting place since 1839”, and the Hahndorf SA town listing also says established in 1839, calling it one of the first hotels in South Australia. This guide repeats that claim and does not use any other year. 6, 14

The hotel says it is known for Bavarian brews, with Hofbräu on tap, plus local breweries, cideries and distilleries. The menu pairs signature German dishes with Australian pub classics. The phone on the page is +61 (8) 8388 7013. 6

“These walls can talk” is the hotel’s augmented-reality history on the same site, using historic photos around the building that open from a QR code on your phone. 6

Function bookings are for seated dining only, and the page says the hotel will not accept large group bookings for drinks only. A large booking is confirmed when a deposit has been received, using [email protected]. 6

The same page describes a gaming lounge, with 35 machines, and says it is the only TAB in town. It prints the National Gambling Helpline, 1800 858 858. Mentioning the room is not a recommendation to use it. 6

Which pub has rooms upstairs or on site?

The Hahndorf Old Mill Hotel, at 98 Main Street, is the pub with rooms on site. The hotel site says it has welcomed locals and visitors since 1863. The accommodation page lists hotel rooms, spa suites and chalets, including family chalets, booked on hahndorfhotel.com.au rather than through a partner button. 7, 9

The hotel describes pub fare, including schnitzels and Black Angus steaks, with vegetarian and vegan options and a dedicated kids’ menu. It says the function space seats up to 180. The town listing calls it a steakhouse with a Stein and Pretzel Bar and live entertainment, and the current site to use is hahndorfhotel.com.au. 7, 8, 15

The Old Mill site includes a gaming section as well as the dining rooms. When gaming comes up on this street, use the line the German Arms prints: National Gambling Helpline, 1800 858 858. 7, 6

Where to go if you’d rather have wine than beer?

Go to the Adelaide Hills Wine Bar at 62 Mount Barker Road, which the site also calls Main Street. The Wolf Blass Foundation runs it as the wine-bar choice on this street, with Museum Selection wines, and the phone on the page is (08) 7078 9920. 10, 12

The building page says the bar occupies the heritage-listed 1912 State Bank building, with the 1854 Hahndorf School building under the same roof set up as a cooperage display. It also names the Wolf Blass Gallery and Wine Museum, and Wolfie’s Horse Bar, a 7 metre bar. 12, 10

The dining page lists stone-baked pizzas, platters and tapas, served inside or under the verandah. The home page says a table booking keeps your seat, especially on busy weekends, through Now Book It. The bar is closed on some weekdays, so check those days there. 11, 10

Are Hahndorf pubs good for kids and groups?

Only where a page says so. The Hahndorf SA town listing says the Inn is pokie-free with its own kids’ games room, and that listing is marked “Not verified”, so ask the Inn. The Old Mill publishes a dedicated kids’ menu, and the German Arms takes large groups for seated dining rather than drinks only. 13, 8, 6, 3

Where can you stay a short walk from the pubs?

Three saved stays sit on this road, and the Old Mill keeps rooms of its own. The Hahndorf Lodge is at 35a Mount Barker Road beside the Inn. Reisen Hotel Hahndorf is at 25 Mount Barker Road. Hahndorf Motel is at 60 Main Street, and the Old Mill’s rooms stay at 98 Main Street on the hotel site. 17, 18, 19, 9

A spa bath in another saved Hills stay is covered in Adelaide Hills accommodation with a spa bath. A dog at the stay is a separate question, in pet-friendly accommodation in Hahndorf. Neither page decides whether a pub will seat the dog.

Where can you eat and then take a guided walk?

The Hahndorf After Dark Walking Tour with meal included starts with a main-course meal at The Haus, 38A Main Street. The After Dark walk with Hahndorf Walking Tours follows. 16

The listing says to bring a torch, that the walk runs in any weather, and that it is not a ghost tour. Treat it as a meal plus a walk, not a pub crawl. 16

Frequently asked questions

Is the Hahndorf Bier Hall a separate pub across town?

No. The Inn’s functions page places the Hahndorf Brewing Bier Hall in the Borchers Blacksmith Barn, circa 1863, adjacent to the Inn. The brewing site’s headline is “HAHNDORF BIER HALL”. Treat it as the hall beside the Inn, and check that site for the days it opens. It is the barn next door, not a second pub on another street.

Does the German Arms take a large group that only wants drinks?

The German Arms functions note says bookings are for seated dining only. It will not accept large group bookings for drinks only. A large booking is confirmed when a deposit has been received. The email on that note is [email protected]. Ask the hotel before you hold the date for a group.

Can I leave the car at the Old Mill?

The Old Mill accommodation page says every reservation includes access to on-site parking, at 98 Main Street. That line is about staying at the hotel. It does not describe street parking for a meal only. If you are booking a room, use the hotel site. If you are only eating, read the signs on the street.

Does the town listing for the Inn count as the venue’s own words?

The Hahndorf SA listing says the Inn is pokie-free and has its own kids’ games room, and it is marked “Not verified”. The Inn’s own about page covers Bavarian food, the Holmes family and 1863. Use the town listing for the games-room line, then ask the Inn. Do not treat that directory page as a menu.

Which page covers breakfast, if this one does not?

Breakfast in Hahndorf is a separate guide. It covers places that publish a breakfast menu, including The Haus and the farm cafe. This pubs page does not set out breakfast dishes. Read that guide for breakfast, then use this one for a drink and a meal on Main Street.

Browse places to stay if you want a night on this street, and places to eat for the wider venue list. The four cards above are the pub-style choice. Other venues on that list are not covered here.
