Adelaide Hills wine tours via Hahndorf

Hahndorf is a town in the Adelaide Hills. An Adelaide Hills wine tour is a guided day that stops here, not a cellar-door list you drive yourself. The guided e-bike tour is the one that meets in Hahndorf. Barossa and McLaren Vale combos leave less of the visit on the main street.

What we found

We conducted checks on the 20 pages in Sources and repeat only what they state. We read the Adelaide Hills Divine Wine Tour listing and the private day listing. For example, the Divine Wine Tour, such as its saved listing, names a Hahndorf stop, and the private listing is capped at eight guests. Contact the operator before you book, and read about the author for how this was checked. 2, 3

The Department for Environment and Water places Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills, 28 km south-east of Adelaide, a common stop on Hills wine days. It calls the town, established in 1839, Australia's oldest surviving German settlement. 1

Which Adelaide Hills wine tours stop in Hahndorf?

The Hills-only listings in this section give the village a longer stop, with lunch. That is time in Hahndorf on a set day, rather than on the private tour. 2

On the Adelaide Hills Divine Wine Tour, the itinerary lists Mount Lofty Summit for a set stop, Golding Wines in Lobethal for a set stop, and Nepenthe Cellar Door for a shorter stop. 2

Hahndorf is next, for a longer stop, with lunch at a restaurant on the main street. Beerenberg Farm is a short stop to browse the products. Sidewood Estate, whose cellar door is at 6 River Road, Hahndorf, is a tasting. 2, 20

Pickup is from Glenelg or Adelaide CBD accommodation, and the drive out goes through Summertown and Uraidla. The page says the itinerary is for reference only and can change. 2

Three other saved Hills days also list a longer stop in Hahndorf with lunch. They are the Hahndorf & Hills Wine and/or Gin Tour, Sip & Scenic: Adelaide Hills, and the Adelaide Hills Food & Wine Tour. The gin tour can also pick up from Hahndorf accommodation, and it names lunch at Haus Hahndorf. 6, 7, 8

Which listings do not really stop in the village?

One private wine, gin and brew day is shorter in the village. It lists Hahndorf as a short pass-by, plus a tasting at Heaps Good Spirits in Hahndorf. That is not the longer lunch stop. 9

Another private listing, Adelaide Hills Wine Tour, names Sidewood Estate and Somerled and does not list a Hahndorf village stop. This guide does not treat it as a tour that stops in the village. 10

A cellar-door day you drive yourself is a different choice. It is on the Hahndorf wineries and cellar doors guide. A general sightseeing day that is not a wine tour is not the subject of this page either.

Should you book a set Hills day or a private tour?

Book the set Hills day if you want those stops and a city or Glenelg pickup. Book the private day if you want the plan changed, for a group of no more than eight. 2, 3

The Private Adelaide Hills Wine Tastings and Lunch Day Tour prints a departure and a return on its page. It names Mount Lofty, Stirling, Aldgate, Bridgewater, Hahndorf, cellar-door tastings, Woodside Cheesewrights, Melba's Chocolate Factory and a platter lunch with a drink. 3

The meeting point is 2 Barretts Road, Torrens Park. The description says hotel and airport pickup are available on request, and the includes list names hotel and airport pickup as well. 3

Beerenberg is a visit to the Farm Shop. Pick-your-own is an option from November to April. The page says the itinerary is flexible and can change. 3

How much Hahndorf time is left on a Barossa or McLaren Vale day?

Less than the Hills-only longer stop, on most of these listings. One McLaren Vale day still lists a longer stop in the village. The others list a shorter stop, and one listing’s description and itinerary line do not use the same length. 5, 12, 13

From Adelaide: Hahndorf and Barossa Day Tour with Lunch meets at Stamford Plaza Adelaide, 150 North Terrace. The description gives Hahndorf a longer stop. 5

The itinerary line on the same page gives a different length, so check the page for your date. 5

The same listing gives Beerenberg a short stop. It says strawberry picking runs from November to April and is paid to the farm, while the shop visit runs in other months. 5

Melba's is a short stop. Lunch and a tasting are at Kies Family Wines, then Ubertas. 5

The description also includes Seppeltsfield. The timed itinerary does not list Seppeltsfield as its own stop. The page says the plan is for reference and can change, and that the day is not suitable for wheelchair users. 5

Barossa to Hahndorf Wine Tasting and Lunch lists a longer stop in Hahndorf as the last stop, with pickup from Adelaide CBD and Glenelg. Explore Barossa & Hahndorf lists a shorter stop in Hahndorf and says the group can reach 30. 14, 15

McLaren Vale and Historic Hahndorf Wine Tour lists a longer stop in Hahndorf with lunch, and pickup from Glenelg or Adelaide CBD. McLaren Vale & Hahndorf Tour lists a shorter stop in the village and says the group can reach 30. 12, 13

Where does the guided Hahndorf e-bike tour start?

It starts in Hahndorf, at The Lane Vineyard, 5 Ravenswood Lane. The Lane’s own site gives that same address. This is a guided ride, not a city coach. 4, 19

The meeting point on the page is The Lane. The includes line also lists hotel pickup and drop-off. Check which of those applies to your date before you rely on a city pickup. 4

The listing says the ride is about 20 kilometres and is a longer ride. It goes to Beerenberg for seasonal strawberry picking, through the Hahndorf main street, to Udder Delights, Shaw + Smith and Nepenthe, then back to The Lane for a tasting. 4

The page says the ride suits beginners, and also that earlier riding experience is recommended. It is for adults 18 and over, it runs rain or shine, and it is not for people with mobility impairments or for children under 18. Open-toed shoes are not allowed. 4

A self-guided e-bike with lunch starts at the Goat Shed in Belair National Park. That page does not mention Hahndorf, so it is not one of the tours in the table. 11

What does a typical Adelaide Hills loop include?

On the Hills-only listings, the day runs from Adelaide to Mount Lofty Summit, a cellar door, Hahndorf’s main street, Beerenberg Farm, and Sidewood. The guided e-bike uses The Lane instead, and starts there. Golding, Nepenthe, Sidewood and The Lane are all on the regional cellar-door list. 2, 4, 18

Where do those stops sit?

  1. Start in Adelaide. The Divine Wine Tour picks up from CBD or Glenelg accommodation. The private day meets at 2 Barretts Road, Torrens Park, unless you have asked for a hotel or airport pickup.
  2. Mount Lofty Summit is on the Hills-only and private listings, for the view back over Adelaide. The tourism commission puts the summit on its don’t-miss list.
  3. A cellar door follows on the Divine Wine Tour: Golding Wines in Lobethal, then Nepenthe. Both names are on the regional cellar-door list.
  4. Hahndorf main street is the longer stop on that tour, with lunch at a restaurant on the street.
  5. Beerenberg Farm is the short stop on that tour. Picking rules are different on the e-bike, the private day and the Barossa day, so read the listing.
  6. Sidewood Estate, 6 River Road, Hahndorf, is the last tasting on the Divine Wine Tour. The guided e-bike starts and ends at The Lane Vineyard, 5 Ravenswood Lane, Hahndorf.

What should you confirm before you book?

Confirm that Hahndorf is a stop, where you are picked up, whether lunch is included, and what Beerenberg picking means on that tour. 2, 4, 5, 16

  1. The activity pages say the itinerary can change. Use the page for your date, not a memory of this guide.
  2. Match the pickup to where you are staying. CBD, Glenelg, Hahndorf accommodation, Torrens Park and The Lane are different instructions.
  3. Lunch is included on the Divine Wine Tour, the private day and the Barossa day. The e-bike includes a cheese platter and tastings, not the same main-street lunch.
  4. Beerenberg picking is a browse stop, a seasonal include, a November-to-April option, or an extra paid to the farm, depending on the listing.
  5. The Barossa day with lunch says it is not suitable for wheelchair users. The e-bike says it is not suitable for people with mobility impairments.

2, 3, 4, 5, 6

Which wines is the Adelaide Hills known for?

The Adelaide Hills Wine Region groups its styles as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, cool-climate Shiraz, Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, sparkling and Sauvignon Blanc. 17

A tour page names the cellar doors and the tastings it includes. It does not promise that every one of those styles is poured. Read the winery, or ask on the day, if a grape matters to you. 2, 17

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a car if I book a wine tour?

The tourism commission says a car is recommended for wineries, gardens, lookouts and villages. Check a map for the drive from Adelaide. It depends on the first stop. The coach and private days here include a pickup, so you are not the driver between tastings. The e-bike is different: you ride, and you meet in Hahndorf.

Can I start the tour in Hahndorf instead of Adelaide?

Most of the city days pick up in Adelaide CBD or Glenelg. The Hahndorf & Hills Wine and/or Gin Tour also lists pickup from Hahndorf accommodation. The guided e-bike meets at The Lane Vineyard, 5 Ravenswood Lane. The private day meets in Torrens Park, and describes hotel or airport pickup as available on request.

Is strawberry picking at Beerenberg included?

It depends on the listing. The Divine Wine Tour is a short stop to browse the farm products, not pick-your-own. The e-bike includes seasonal picking. The Barossa day says picking runs from November to April and is paid to the farm. The private day lists pick-your-own in that season as an option. Check the page for your date.

Does a short pass-by of Hahndorf count as a stop?

No. The private wine, gin and brew day lists Hahndorf as a short pass-by, plus a tasting at Heaps Good Spirits in Hahndorf. That is not the longer village lunch on the Hills-only days. A different private listing names Sidewood and Somerled and does not list the village at all.

Are the Barossa combo groups small?

Not on every listing. Explore Barossa & Hahndorf, and the McLaren Vale & Hahndorf Tour, each say the day is shared. They say numbers can reach 30, in a car, a minibus or a coach. The private Hills day states a maximum of eight. The Divine Wine Tour page does not print a group size, so do not assume one.

If the day ends in the village, read breakfast in Hahndorf for breakfast in town, Adelaide Hills accommodation with a spa bath if you are staying over, and strawberry picking at Beerenberg for the farm’s own picking rules. More places to stay are on stays. More things to do are on experiences.
