What is at Mount Lofty Summit?
A lookout, Flinders Column, a visitor outlet and a café. The park says the peak rises more than 710 metres above sea level, and that more than 350,000 people visit each year. OpenStreetMap names the monument on the lookout Flinders Column. 1, 13
What we found
The park pages describe a free lookout, walks, and a bus change at Crafers. We conducted checks on the 17 pages in Sources and repeat only what they state. For example, the summit page names Flinders Column. Bus 801 is the ride toward Crafers. Contact the park page named in Sources if a detail has changed. Read more about the author. 1, 2, 3, 7
- If you have a car, choose Mount Lofty Summit Road from Hahndorf.
- If you are on the bus, choose route 801 to Crafers and then route 823.
- If you want a walk from the summit, choose Waterfall Gully or Cleland.

The park runs a Visitor Information Outlet and gift shop in the summit complex, for maps, trail advice and souvenirs. It says the lookout is accessible, with accessible parking and accessible toilets. Walks from here link to Waterfall Gully, the Heysen Trail and Cleland Wildlife Park. 1
The Summit Restaurant and Café is next to the outlet, and the park says it is fully licensed. The operator’s site gives the address as 266 Mount Lofty Summit Road, Crafers SA 5152. 1, 5
How do you get to Mount Lofty Summit from Hahndorf?
Drive Mount Lofty Summit Road, or combine two buses and plan the change. Adelaide Metro says route 801 runs from Mount Barker to the city via Hahndorf, Bridgewater, Aldgate, Stirling and the Crafers ramp, so the city-bound bus from Hahndorf serves that ramp. Route 823 runs between Crafers Park ’n’ Ride and Cleland Wildlife Park via the summit, including Stop 26 Summit Rd. 7, 6, 8, 1
Do not assume the 801 and the 823 share a stop. Towards Cleland, Adelaide Metro starts 823 at Crafers Park ’n’ Ride. The other direction lists a Crafers ramp stop. The route has only a few services, so check the timetable and plan the change in the Adelaide Metro journey planner. The Adelaide to Hahndorf by bus guide covers the 801 in more detail, and Getting to Hahndorf collects the other ways into the town. 7, 6
By car, the summit is on Mount Lofty Summit Road, Crafers, and the park says parking fees apply. On foot from the bus, the Crafers to Mt Lofty link trail is 4.5 km, and the park says it starts opposite the Crafers bus stop. 1

The city skyline, and the coast beyond it. The park says the summit gives panoramic views across Adelaide’s city skyline to the coast. That is the lookout view. The column and the cafe terrace are on the summit itself. 1

Which Mount Lofty walks suit you?
Match the distance and the start to the day you want. The park states the lengths in the table. A short loop with seats, the link from the Crafers bus, the steep hike, the low-gradient trail from Cleland, and a longer loop are the five set out below. 1

| Trail | Distance | Pace | Start | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Discovery Walk | 1 km loop | A shorter walk | Below the summit lookout | A short loop with seats |
| Crafers to Mt Lofty link trail | 4.5 km | A longer walk from the bus | Opposite the Crafers bus stop | Walking up from the bus |
| Waterfall Gully to Mount Lofty | 4.5 km one way | A longer hike | Waterfall Gully car park | A hike with steep sections |
| Steub Trail | 7 km return | A longer low-gradient climb | Cleland Wildlife Park | A low-gradient climb |
| Adventure loop | 10 km | The longer loop | Joins the Waterfall Gully trail | A longer loop in the park |
Two shorter links sit beside that table. The Harford Trail is 1.5 km, between Cleland Wildlife Park and the Waterfall Gully trail below Chinamans Hut Track. The Bilba hike is 1.5 km, from the Waterfall Gully hike across to Cleland. A stroll of Hahndorf’s main street is a different outing, on the Hahndorf walking tours guide. 1
