What we found

We conducted checks on the 16 pages in Sources and repeat only what they state. We read the Discovery Parks - Hahndorf page and its powered-site page. For example, those pages, such as the park page, describe sites and cabins at the town’s caravan park. Contact the park before you book, and read about the author for how this was checked. 2, 3

The Department for Environment and Water says the town was named after Captain Dirk Hahn of the Zebra, which brought its first settlers in 1838. It dates Hahndorf to 1839 and calls it Australia's oldest surviving German settlement. 1

A powered site takes a rig up to 8 m (26 ft), including the drawbar, and a drive-thru site takes a rig up to 12.2 m (40 ft). 3, 4

Where can you stay if the caravan park is full?

If the park is full, Nestled Cabins in Verdun and Hahndorf Log Cabin are the two nearby stays checked for this guide. Village rooms are on the hotels and motels in Hahndorf guide, and cottages are on the cottages and bed and breakfasts guide. 12, 13

Nestled Cabins is at 848 Mount Barker Road, Verdun, the next locality towards Adelaide. The listing calls it a camping site with cabins, and lists air-conditioning, private bathrooms, kitchenettes, a barbecue, an outdoor dining area, garden views, a hot tub and free private parking. 12

  • Cooking. The Studio Cottage has a kitchenette. Access cabins have full cooking. Summit Rooms do not.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hahndorf Resort Tourist Park the same as Discovery Parks - Hahndorf?

Yes. Discovery Parks - Hahndorf was formerly known as Hahndorf Resort Tourist Park. The SA Parks listing also says it was formerly BIG4 Hahndorf Resort. This guide uses the operator’s current name and the address the park prints, 145A Mount Barker Road, Hahndorf SA 5245. It does not add a longer history.

Why do some pages show 145a Main Street?

The park prints 145A Mount Barker Road, Hahndorf SA 5245. A listing for the same park prints 145a Main Street. Use the operator’s address. The park map still puts Main Street a 1,200 m walk away, and the Fruit and Veg Market on Mount Barker Road at about 400 m. The street line on a listing is not that walk.

Does the park have a bistro and a bar?

The park’s facility list used here names a camp kitchen, BBQs, a pool, a playground and mini golf. It does not name a bistro. The property listing lists a bistro and a bar, plus an outdoor pool, a playground, mini golf and a self-service laundry. Treat the bistro as what that listing says.

Can you get to Adelaide without a car?

Yes, if you can walk to a bus stop with your bag. Adelaide Metro describes route 801 as a bus between the city and Hahndorf, with stops on Mt Barker Road. This page does not print a timetable. Boarding points and the Hahndorf stops are on the Adelaide to Hahndorf by bus guide. Check Adelaide Metro before you travel.

Does every cabin at the park take a dog?

No. The park map marks pets at sites and selected cabins, and lists a Superior pet-friendly unit that sleeps 4. SA Parks says pet friendly, then enquire. Discovery Parks’ FAQ says pet rules differ by park, so confirm the cabin. One pet-friendly unit is not a rule for every cabin.

The where-to-stay hub, linked above, lists this page with the other stay guides. Match the rig or the group first, then open the property page for the stay you want.
