The Department for Environment and Water places Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills, 28 km south-east of Adelaide, the same side of the city as Mount Barker. It calls Hahndorf, established in 1839, Australia's oldest surviving German settlement. ⁠¹

Why stay in Mount Barker for a Hahndorf trip?

Mount Barker suits a Hahndorf trip when you want the bigger town next door, with room for a group or a longer stay. Visit Adelaide Hills calls it the region’s largest town in this part of the Hills, and describes a cinema complex, historic Gawler Street, and the services a touring stop needs. ⁠^{10, 11}

South Australia’s Mount Barker page describes a tree-lined main street, Keith Stephenson Park and the linear trail. Check a map for the drive from Adelaide. How far is Mount Barker from Hahndorf, and can you get between them without a car?

Visit Adelaide Hills says Mount Barker is 39 kilometres from Adelaide. Check a map for the drive from Hahndorf, and you can also take the bus. The whole-home listing title says 8 km to Hahndorf. Use that figure for 7A Fletcher Road, and check a map for the drive between the towns. ⁠^{10, 7}

Adelaide Metro describes route 801 as Mount Barker to the city, via Hahndorf. It runs on all seven days. T801 is the weekday limited-stop service and still runs via Hahndorf. N801 is a separate Saturday service from Mount Barker to the city via Hahndorf, not the regular 801. Boarding points and stops are on the Adelaide to Hahndorf by bus guide. What are Grandview’s Elm Tree and Flaxley apartments?

Grandview’s Elm Tree apartments are two self-contained apartments at 35 Adelaide Road, in the heart of the Mount Barker township. Grandview says they are 100 metres from cafes, restaurants, supermarkets and cinemas, and that the rear looks onto parkland. ⁠^{2, 4}

Apartment 1 sleeps 4, with two king beds, two bathrooms, a full kitchen, a washer/dryer and one car park. Apartment 2 sleeps 6, with three bedrooms, two king beds, two single beds, two bathrooms, a full kitchen, a washer/dryer and one car park. ⁠²

The Flaxley apartments are two more Grandview apartments, at 1 Coral Street, not the same building. Grandview says they are 1 kilometre from the centre, with parkland views, and that each sleeps 4, with a full kitchen and a washer/dryer. Its listing also lists free parking. What is A Suite Spot in the Hills?

A Suite Spot in the Hills is a guesthouse at 12 Bowden Court, and its listing lists a kitchenette, a garden, a barbecue, free parking and a continental breakfast served in the room. ⁠⁶

The same listing describes guest-house rooms with a private bathroom, and outdoor space in the garden. It does not publish one sleep count that fits every room, so read the room line on that page before you book. ⁠⁶

When does a whole home suit a group?

The 3bedroom Modern Home at 7A Fletcher Road is a whole house, and its listing title says it is 8 km from Hahndorf. Its listing lists three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a full kitchen and free parking. ⁠⁷

The listing says the house is within walking distance of Mt Barker Central, Foodland, Weld Park and the Gawler Street precinct. That line is about shops and a park in Mount Barker. The listing title puts Hahndorf 8 km away. ⁠⁷

Is there a hotel in Mount Barker?

The Barker Hotel at 32 Gawler Street is a pub and bistro, and its website lists dining and functions, not rooms. The Mount Barker National Trust says this Gawler Street hotel was licensed as The Mount Barker Hotel and now operates as The Barker Hotel. ⁠^{8, 9}

The same website also lists bars and gaming. It does not list guest rooms. For a hotel or motel room you can walk to Hahndorf’s main street from, use the hotels and motels guide. ⁠⁸

What should you check before booking in Mount Barker?

Before you book, match the beds and bedrooms to your group, read the parking line, and decide whether you will drive to Hahndorf or take the 801. ⁠^{2, 6, 7, 12}

• Beds and bedrooms. Elm Tree is 4 or 6 guests. Flaxley is 4 per apartment. The Fletcher Road house lists three bedrooms and two bathrooms. A Suite Spot needs the room line. ⁠
• Parking, as that property lists it. Elm Tree names one car park per apartment. Flaxley names two. A Suite Spot and the whole home list free parking. ⁠
• The trip to Hahndorf. Drive, or use route 801 and check the current Adelaide Metro timetable. ⁠
