Car hire in Adelaide city for a Hahndorf day

Hahndorf is a town in the Adelaide Hills, 28 km up the South Eastern Freeway. Visit Adelaide Hills is the site that says hire cars are available in the city and at the airport. The Hahndorf Community Association is the group that names Budget, Hertz, Thrifty and Avis. Check a map for the drive and use the free car parks.

What we found

We conducted checks on the 9 pages in Sources and repeat only what they state. We read the getting-here page and the car-park page. For example, the getting-here page, such as its hire-car note, covers cars in the city, and the car-park page names free car parks in Hahndorf. Contact the rental company before you collect the car, and read about the author for how this was checked. 1, 3

Can you hire a car in Adelaide city for a Hahndorf day trip?

Yes. You can hire a car in the city, and Visit Adelaide Hills says hire cars are widely available in the city and metropolitan area, as well as at Adelaide Airport. The town association says car hire is available from the Adelaide CBD or the airport. 1, 2

That town page, dated January 2021, names Budget, Hertz, Thrifty and Avis. Treat the list as the association’s, not a full set of city depots, and not a set of addresses. Confirm the depot on the booking you actually choose. 2

  • Read the depot address on the booking. This guide does not print one.
  • Check that the depot is open for the pickup and the return, including a weekend.
  • Ask about a drop-off if the desk may be shut when you get back.
  • Read the fuel rule, so you know whether to refill before the return.
  • Decide one day or two before you book. A same-day return has to clear the drive back down.

Flying in, and you want the car at the terminal? Use Adelaide Airport car hire for Hahndorf. That guide covers the desks and the airport car park. This one starts in the city.

How do you get out of the Adelaide CBD onto the South Eastern Freeway?

Head south-east out of the city along Glen Osmond Road to Glen Osmond, where the South Eastern Freeway begins. Then follow the signs to the Hahndorf exit. 2, 1

The town association says the bus out of the city makes stops along Glen Osmond Road, which is the road this route uses toward the freeway. Visit Adelaide Hills says the freeway is six lanes, links Adelaide and Melbourne, and signposts the Hahndorf exit. Use your navigation as well as those signs. 2, 1

The freeway then climbs through the Heysen Tunnels. The Department for Infrastructure and Transport says the tunnels sit on the South Eastern Freeway between Glen Osmond and Crafers, and that they provide a high-speed dual carriageway. DIT says major works finished in December 2024 and both tunnels are open. Minor finishing works can bring temporary restrictions. Check Traffic SA for roadworks and closures before you leave. 6, 7, 9

Keep the drives apart. The town association says Hahndorf is 28 km south-east of Adelaide via the freeway. A gateway town is not the same drive as Hahndorf. Neither starts at the airport. Check a map. 2, 1

  1. Pick up the car in the Adelaide city centre. Confirm the depot address on your booking.
  2. Head south-east along Glen Osmond Road to Glen Osmond, where the South Eastern Freeway begins.
  3. Take the freeway through the Heysen Tunnels, between Glen Osmond and Crafers.
  4. Leave at the signposted Hahndorf exit.
  5. Use a free public car park and walk the main street.

Where do you park in Hahndorf?

Use the free public car parks first. The Hahndorf Community Association names Carl Nitschke Memorial Car Park, a small car park on the left just before Main Street, and Hahndorf Car Park at 5 Auricht Road, behind the Hahndorf Institute. 3

The association says both fill quickly and are not suitable for RVs. The town association, on its January 2021 page, also recommends the free car parks at the far end of the main street rather than only the spaces along the street. 3, 2

On the main street, the council’s July 2026 draft parking plan describes on-street parking as typically parallel, time-limited and marked 3P and free. It describes council off-street parking as time-limited and free. The same plan’s 2025 surveys put peak demand on Fridays and weekends, with Easter Saturday the highest. Outside those peaks it says supply is adequate. During peaks, demand spreads into side streets. 5, 4

Some private car parks along the main street charge, or offer a short free period. Check the signs. Do not rely on a fee from this page. The council endorsed a parking management plan in October 2026, after a meeting on 6 October 2026. That plan may change the arrangements, including paid parking later. Follow the signs on the day. 3, 5, 4

How do you return a city hire car the same day?

Allow for the descent before your return time. The Department for Infrastructure and Transport says the last 7 km into Adelaide is a long, steep descent that ends at a major signalised intersection. 8

Keep your distance from trucks in the left lane on that descent. Then refuel if your booking’s fuel rule says to, and hand the car back at the city depot. Check a map for the drive up. The drive down still has to fit before the return time, with city traffic at the end. 8, 2

If the day includes wine tasting, do not drive afterwards. Visit Adelaide Hills says you must not drive at a blood alcohol level of 0.05 per cent or higher. A tour with a driver is the alternative. Compare Adelaide Hills wine tours via Hahndorf or Hahndorf cellar doors if you want the tastings without being the driver. 1

Is a one-day or two-day hire better?

A one-day hire fits a straightforward visit to the village and a same-day return. A two-day hire, with a night in Hahndorf, fits an unhurried day, dinner, or Beerenberg and the cellar doors without rushing the car back down the freeway.

For the bus, read Adelaide to Hahndorf by bus. This page does not restate the route number. For dinner in the village, see German food in Hahndorf.

If you keep the car overnight, these three village stays list free parking on the saved catalogue. The reasons use that catalogue text only. Open the property page to confirm the room. This guide does not print a rate.

Frequently asked questions

Is parking free in Hahndorf?

The two public car parks the community association names are free, and the council’s draft plan calls main-street on-street parking time-limited and free. Some private car parks charge, or offer a short free period. Read the signs. A parking plan endorsed in October 2026 may change the arrangements.

How long does it take to drive from Adelaide to Hahndorf?

The town association says Hahndorf is 28 km south-east of Adelaide via the South Eastern Freeway. Check a map for that drive, and for the separate drive to a gateway town. That is a drive from Adelaide, not from the airport. Allow longer in city traffic, and again for the steep descent on the way back.

Can you hire a car in Hahndorf itself?

The town association and Visit Adelaide Hills point to the Adelaide CBD or the airport. Neither page confirms a staffed depot in the village, and this guide does not claim one. The car hire page can also search Hahndorf and nearby. Read where that offer collects before you treat it as a pickup in the town.

Do I need a car to visit Hahndorf from Adelaide?

No. A bus runs from the city, and a guided tour can collect you there if you would rather not drive, including after tastings. The bus guide covers the service. The wine tours guide covers a day with another driver. Hire a car when you want to set the stops.

Flying into Adelaide: should you collect the car in the city?

Collect at the airport if you want the car when you land. A city depot is a separate trip from the terminal before you reach the freeway. The Adelaide Airport car hire guide covers the desks and the airport return. This page is for a hire that starts while you are already in the city.

A one-day hire still needs a return buffer. A two-day hire needs a bed as well as the car. The car hire page opens with Adelaide city centre as the pickup. Confirm the depot address on the offer.
